PAT Testing Process

Portable appliance testing includes a thorough visual inspection of the appliance to check for:

  • Damage to the flex and strain relief
  • Damaged to the plug and casing (overheating, burn marks, discoloration)
  • An incorrectly wired plug
  • An incorrectly rated fuse

PAT Test EquipmentA series of tests are then performed. Depending on the classification of the equipment these tests may include:

  • Earth continuity testing
  • Insulation resistance
  • Polarity test
  • Earth leakage test
  • Operational test

Custom made labels are then applied to indicate PASS FAIL status of the appliance. If required, we can also design and supply custom made asset labels:

  • PASS/FAIL Label
  • Asset tag
  • Digital Media Label

Being trained & certified and using the latest, fully calibrated test equipment, we follow a standardized testing procedure designed to thoroughly test the safety of all your appliances. Our procedure conforms to the code of practice laid out by the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) - the standards body responsible for PAT testing. Prior to attending site a specific Risk Assessment and a generic method statement will be compiled and submitted for your records.

As all appliances need to be unplugged prior to testing, testing can be carried out outside of normal working hours ensuring there is no effect on staff productivity. This service is provided at no extra cost.

Appliances are discreetly labelled with the result of the test (pass or fail). Any remedial action that can be taken during testing (repairing plugs/fuses etc) will be carried out at that time for no extra charge. More complex faults or damage are reported to the business manager. Upon completion of testing, electronic records are downloaded and compiled on optical media for your convenience. The standard files produced are an ASSET REGISTER, LATEST TEST RESULTS, DETAILED ASSET REGISTER and the PASS/FAIL CERTIFICATES. These files can be provided in MS Word or Adobe PDF format.

As a final assurance for the quality of our testing, all services are underwritten with full public liability insurance, allowing you to concentrate on your business objectives safe in the knowledge that your working environment is in good condition and complies with current regulations.
